Brianna is a volunteer at the South Australian Museum in the mammology department, and is currently a participant in the Adelaide Graduate Award.

“My role in the mammology department is to assist with collection management and upkeep. My tasks involve specimen preparation, repair, cleaning and entry into the collection. I get to interact with lots of rare and beautiful specimens, including things that most people wouldn’t know are part of the museum collection!”

As a participant in the Adelaide Graduate Award, Brianna can credit all of her time spent volunteering at the Museum towards the hours required to achieve the Award.

Brianna is no stranger to extracurricular activities and believes that they are vital to getting the most out of the University experience and community:

“New and continuing students should definitely be involved with university culture. I volunteered throughout my entire undergraduate and was heavily involved with both social and sporting clubs. This added a lot to my university experience and gave me a real sense of belonging, which is something that I think all students should have a chance to experience.”

Designed to offer a chance for all students to get involved with extra-curricular activities of interest, the Adelaide Graduate Award is a free program to enhance employability skills. Through the Award, you complete 150 hours of extracurricular activities during your degree. You are also required to develop a resume and LinkedIn profile, with assistance available through CareerHub. To finish, you will submit a short reflection piece that will help you to think about how your employability skills have developed through your extra-curricular activities.

With hundreds of activities to choose from and a flexible timeframe, the Adelaide Graduate Award is designed to run alongside your degree without adding any extra study load. When you complete the Award, you get formal recognition through an addition to your transcript and a certificate of completion. It is the University’s way of recognising you for your extra-curricular pursuits. Even time spent working a part time job is eligible to contribute to the Award!
