Applying for your Tax File Number has never been easier with the ATO and Australia Post

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Australia Post have made it a simpler process for you to get

that all-important Tax File Number (TFN) that you may need for your future.

So why do I need a TFN? Having a TFN means you can obtain a student loan to pay for your university

courses. It also means that your employer and superannuation fund won’t have to withhold tax at the

highest marginal rate, and your tax return will be much less of a headache!

If you are applying for university, starting your very first job or you’re already working and don’t have a

TFN you can apply for one by simply going online to ato.gov.au/TFNapply and following these three

easy steps.

1) Fill in the application and print out the summary

2) Take your summary along with the required identification to your nearest Australia Post retail

outlet

3) Australia Post will sight your identity documents and send the information from your application

to the ATO online.

you

 You can book an appointment with your nearest Australia Post retail outlet

 If you don’t have time to visit Australia Post, a parent or guardian can do it on your behalf
