The Adelaide Graduate Award formally recognises students for developing employability skills through extra-curricular activities (including paid work and volunteering). The program is open to all enrolled University of Adelaide students and is an excellent way to boost your experience, highlight your extra-curricular achievements, and stand out to potential employers.
Jerome Huang, a 2021 recipient of the Adelaide Graduate Award, shared his journey. Jerome studied a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science, and is currently working as a Research Technician at CSIRO.
What extra-curricular activities did you get involved in during your degree?
"Throughout my degree, I participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities. These include, but are not limited to, being an International Student Ambassador, a SET Student Ambassador, and an Adelaide Graduate Award Ambassador."
What are some of the main benefits you gained from being involved in extra-curricular activities?
"Through these experiences, I learned a lot and enjoyed being a part of the local community. I have been given chances to organise activities and social events. I have developed different kinds of skills that future employers are looking for, such as leadership, organisation, and public speaking. On a personal level, by engaging in the local community I have built strong connections and made many new friends."
Why do you think other students should participate in the Adelaide Graduate Award?
"The Award program provides a great pathway for students to prepare for life after university. Not only has it helped me to advocate for myself in job applications and interviews, but it also recognises my contribution and personal growth at a wider level.
Going to university doesn’t always have to be just studying, and participating in extra-curricular activities via the Adelaide Graduate Award is the best way to enhance and fulfil your university experience. I think this has been the most important part of the Award program."
